Norris had his first lap deleted after running wide at Turn 4, but hit back hard to head a front-row lockout for F1 2025 title favourites McLaren.

Red Bull driver and reigning World Champion Max Verstappen was forced to settle for third, almost four tenths off Norris’s time, with George Russell’s Mercedes in fourth.

Yuki Tsunoda was arguably the star of qualifying in securing fifth for Racing Bulls, with his last-gasp Q3 lap dropping the impressive Alex Albon to sixth.

Charles Leclerc edged out Lewis Hamilton in their first qualifying session as Ferrari team-mates as the pair took seventh and eighth respectively.

Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Williams driver Carlos Sainz completed the top 10.

Elsewhere, it was disappointment for Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Liam Lawson and Oliver Bearman as the three rookies exited in Q1.

Mercedes reported bib damage to Antonelli’s car after his W16 was seen sparking heavily in Q1, while Lawson could only manage 18th on his first visit to Albert Park after an engine issue saw the Red Bull driver fail to set a time on Friday practice.

Bearman failed to set a time in qualifying after his Haas developed a gearbox issue in the early stages of Q1.

It came after the Ferrari junior crashed in FP3, following a similar incident in Friday practice.
